I’m Jonathan Mitchell, a UK based freelance fashion designer with over 20 years of experience in the industry, supporting start ups and global brands through my fashion design agency. Fashion Start-Ups
I offer complete fashion design services for start-up brands, taking ideas from concept to final sign-off. This includes creative direction, rounds of revisions, expert consultancy, tech packs and size charts. You’ll be equipped with everything needed to approach manufacturers, get accurate production quotes and develop samples. Whether you’re launching streetwear, activewear or equestrianwear, I help turn your ideas into a focused, production-ready collection.
Activewear Designer
As an activewear designer, I create performance-led collections across gym, fitness, running, yoga, athleisure and teamsports. My work includes football kits for Everton and West Ham, teamwear for Envision and Mahindra, and golfwear for Reflo. I’ve also designed equestrianwear for Equidae London, gymwear for Bulk and runningwear for Dare2b. I focus on fabric, fit and function—helping brands develop activewear that performs, feels great and connects with their audience.
Fashion Manufacturing
I work closely with trusted clothing manufacturers to help bring your designs to life. My network includes sourcing partners and production contacts across the UK, Europe, Turkey and Asia. I supply detailed tech packs and size charts to guide sampling and production. I also assist with fit reviews, factory communication and next steps to help clients move smoothly from design to development and get collections ready for bulk production.
Trend & Concept Development
Every great collection starts with a clear concept. I offer fashion trend research, colour direction, and mood board development to help you build a strong creative foundation. Whether you’re launching a new brand or refreshing your product line, I translate current fashion movements into relevant, focused ideas. From seasonal direction to early design sketches, I help shape collections that connect with your target audience and align with your brand identity.
Sportswear Designer
As a senior sportswear designer at Puma, I lead the sports lifestyle team and created seasonal collections that formed the backbone of the brand’s apparel range. My designs sold over 6 million units per season across global markets. I specialise in blending style with function, creating versatile sportswear from t-shirts to track jackets, windbreakers and more. Every collection I design draws on my deep knowledge of fit, performance and branding.
Streetwear Designer
As a streetwear designer, I specialise in creating bold, trend-led collections that merge fashion and sportswear. My work draws from youth culture, music, and urban style—resulting in pieces that feel current, authentic and wearable. With a strong background in menswear and technical design, I bring creative direction and commercial insight to every project. I’ve designed streetwear collections for brands like Ecko Unltd and Ellesse, combining form, function and creativity.
Attention to Detail
Small details make a big difference when creating premium products. I take the time to refine trims, labels, stitching and branding elements, ensuring every piece feels thought through, cohesive and elevated. Precise technical sketches and well-structured tech packs are a vital part of my process. From custom zippers and neck labels to branded taping and packaging, I make sure no detail is overlooked—because these finishing touches are what set a product apart.
JONATHAN MITCHELL
Freelance Fashion Designer
For five years Jonathan Mitchell worked as a senior sportswear designer at Puma, managing a team across men’s and women’s collections. He led the design of core sportswear and activewear ranges that became the foundation of Puma’s global apparel business, with collections consistently selling over 6 million units per season. He also designed official fanwear for the Italian Football Federation during their World Cup win and for Renault during their F1 title-winning season.
Now working as a freelance sportswear designer, Jonathan has created fashion collections for global brands including Adidas, where he designed a David Beckham range and performance clothing for the London 2012 Olympics. His freelance fashion design projects include activewear and streetwear for Ellesse, Ecko Unltd, and Excel Sports, as well as kit, teamwear and branded merchandise for Wolves, Fulham, Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Formula E champions Envision Racing, plus premium motorsport brand Maserati.
Jonathan’s previous full-time roles include working as an activewear designer at Umbro, designing football kits and training wear for Everton, West Ham and PSV Eindhoven, alongside performance collections. He has also held positions as a ski outerwear designer at Dare2b, a denim designer at Next Sourcing, a streetwear designer at Bench, and a menswear designer at Moss Bros.
Since 2017 Jonathan has been based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, operating as a full-time freelance fashion designer, serving clients across the UK and globally. His studio was named Best Men’s Fashion Design Studio UK in 2019 and was a finalist at the FSB Small Business Awards in 2023.
With a strong focus on sustainable design and smart production, Jonathan regularly supports new and emerging brands with fashion design, sampling and launch support across sportswear, activewear, and streetwear sectors.
