Freelance fashion designer Jonathan Mitchell working in Brighton studio on sportswear and activewear projectsIn the vibrant city of Brighton, I recently had the pleasure of a phenomenal photoshoot with the incredibly talented Anil Mistry. His expertise behind the lens transformed my vision into reality, and I owe him a huge thank you for making me look my best. Shoutout to @anilmistryphoto for his exceptional skills, and all photos taken purely with natural lighting! The lights didn’t even get out the box.

As a UK-based freelance fashion designer, I often split my time between Marsden in West Yorkshire and creative hubs like Brighton and London. This blend of northern grit and southern edge shapes my work across streetwear, sportswear and activewear design.

I also need to express my gratitude to the team at Yolk House, for providing such an inspiring co-working space in Kemp Town, Brighton. Their hospitality and beautiful location worked out great for the photoshoot.

Freelance activewear designer Jonathan Mitchell from J Mitchell Design

Reflecting on my journey, I can’t help but recall my days at 23, climbing the corporate ladder at Puma. Back then, earning the title of Senior Fashion Designer seemed like the pinnacle of success. However, unlike many of my colleagues who aspired for managerial roles, I hesitated to step into that realm of leadership.

The allure of being the boss didn’t quite resonate with me at that point. Fresh out of university, my passion lay in the creative process of designing and crafting clothing. Climbing higher within the corporate hierarchy would have meant sacrificing precious time spent on actual design work for the sake of administrative tasks and meetings.

It wasn’t a path I was ready to take. And so, amidst discussions with my colleagues, I often found myself feeling like the odd one out. While they eagerly pursued managerial positions, I remained steadfast in my desire to stay connected to the design process.

Looking back now, I realise that my reluctance stemmed from a deep-seated belief that true leadership isn’t about titles or authority but about wisdom and experience. It’s about understanding the intricacies of the craft and being able to guide others through that journey. Plus I just love designing!

This love for design is why I’ve continued working hands-on across categories like menswear, womenswear and performance gear. I’ve worked with major fashion design companies in the UK and helped independent clothing designers bring their visions to life. Whether it’s a small capsule range or a full commercial launch, I focus on clarity, creativity and craftsmanship.

Fast forward 20 years, and I’m grateful for the journey I’ve embarked on. Each experience, whether it was designing for renowned brands or collaborating with emerging designers, has shaped me into the professional I am today.

Now, I understand that leadership isn’t about age or job titles; it’s about having the confidence and competence to lead effectively. It’s about embracing your unique path and recognising that there’s no rush to climb the corporate ladder.

As a freelance fashion designer, I’ve had the privilege of working on a multitude of projects, each one presenting its own set of challenges and opportunities. From designing activewear for fitness enthusiasts to crafting streetwear collections for urban dwellers, my portfolio spans a diverse range of styles and aesthetics.

But regardless of the project, one thing remains constant – my commitment to delivering high-quality designs that resonate with my clients and their target audience. Whether it’s through intricate fashion CADs or detailed tech packs, I strive to bring my clients’ vision to life with precision and creativity.

Collaboration is at the heart of what I do. I believe that great design is the result of a collective effort, where ideas are shared, refined, and ultimately transformed into tangible products. That’s why I’m always open to new collaborations and partnerships, eager to explore innovative concepts and push the boundaries of fashion.

I worked with Jon at Puma. He was hard working and very successful during his time at Puma. Jon’s design work was very creative and of a high standard and he was a pleasure to work with. – Marcus Albrecht,
