Top Five Reasons Why I Chose to Be a Freelance Fashion Designer

I just got back from exploring South Korea and Japan 🇰🇷🇯🇵

Did I feel a bit guilty for not being at my desk for three weeks? Maybe a little.
Did my clients’ projects survive without me? Probably.
Would I do it again? Absolutely.

As a freelance fashion designer, I’ve built a lifestyle around flexibility, freedom and creativity. It comes with trade-offs—no holiday pay, no sick days, no guaranteed safety net. But the creative reset I get from travelling, disconnecting and soaking up new influences? That’s priceless.

Here’s why I’ve stuck with freelancing for eight years and have never looked back:

1. Freedom and Flexibility

I still work around my clients’ deadlines, but I get to decide when and how I work. Compared to the rigid structures of full-time roles I had in the past, this freedom helps me produce better work, on my terms.

2. Working Remotely

While some people thrive in office environments, I prefer the calm and focus of working from my home in the Yorkshire countryside. No commute. No wasted time. Just creative flow and stunning views.

3. Diverse Projects

Freelancing means I get to pick the projects I find interesting—across menswear, womenswear, kidswear, sportswear, streetwear, activewear and more. No season feels the same, and I’m no longer creatively stifled by repeating the same brief every six months.

4. Using All My Skills

I’ve always been a generalist—good at creative work but also strong in English, maths, IT, sport and media. As a freelancer, I finally get to use the full spectrum of my skills. I tap into trend research, branding, project management and even marketing—things I never got to explore properly in full-time roles.

5. Travel

It’s my addiction. I’ve visited dozens of countries across Europe, Africa, the Americas, the Middle East and Asia. Every year, I spend at least a couple of months exploring new places. And I always come back with fresh ideas, energy and perspective.
