I was recently invited to appear in a YouTube video titled “I Fact-Checked Dumb Lyrics” by The Right Note, which has now passed 50,000 views. The video takes a humorous look at fashion claims in rap music — and I was featured as the go-to fashion expert to confirm (or deny) some pretty wild statements from artists like Playboi Carti, Kanye West and NLE Choppa.
As someone who’s spent years designing for Adidas, Umbro, Puma, and independent labels like Dripmoda, I was more than happy to lend my opinion. Let’s just say a few rappers got called out — in a polite, fashion-literate way of course.
🧵 Playboi Carti: “Never Wear a Dress”
The first claim came from Playboi Carti, who rapped that he’d “never wear a dress.” But the screenshots from his Backr00ms music video told a different story.
I confirmed: “It’s a long piece of clothing that’s covering his lower area… no leg holes… it’s open. I’d definitely say Carti is wearing a dress.” Myth busted.
🧢 Kanye West: “Don’t Need a Stylist”
Kanye claims he doesn’t need a stylist. I gave him the benefit of the doubt based on his background and work with Yeezy. But I had to add: “From those recent pictures… he probably could’ve done with a little bit of help!” Even icons can miss.
👖 NLE Choppa: Two People in One Pair of Jeans?
Choppa claimed Lil Uzi Vert was “tucked up” inside his Amiri jeans — which, if you’ve ever seen Amiri jeans, you’ll know is physically impossible.
I said: “I’m not even sure one of them could fit in those jeans. They definitely both couldn’t fit in there — no, definitely not.” Fashion fiction confirmed.
🎤 Why It Works
It’s a light-hearted take on pop culture, but it opens the door for real conversations around fashion design, how trends are perceived, and what makes a piece authentic. I’ve been designing clothes for over 20 years — from luxury activewear to football kits and streetwear — and it’s great to see fashion treated with humour and honesty.
