What is Fashion Designing?
Updated: Jul 21
This sounds like a straight forward question, what is fashion designing? As a freelance fashion designer myself, it's my life.
The process of fashion designing can be simple or it can be complex.
Anyone can do fashion design. You just need a pencil and a piece of paper. You can draw pictures of t-shirts or dresses or whatever takes your fancy and then you have the right to call yourself a fashion designer or apparel designer.
You don't have to make the garments, fashion designing is having ideas and getting them out of your head. You can do this by drawing, painting or making CAD designs on your computer.
Breaking the question down, fashion can be whatever you want it to be. Fashion is what you are into. This is dictated by your age, your interests, where you are, who you follow. Normally as a designer you want to create something new but even that is a topic for debate. Something new can be the same as something else with a slight twist or it can be something completely new. For most fashion designers working in the industry we follow fashion trends. So we look at what is happening in the fashion industry and design our own take on fashion that fits in with those trends. Other fashion designers may be thinking completely outside the box and taking high fashion in their own direction.
For the designing part you need to make a visual interpretation of your ideas to show the world or your clients. For me this usually involves using Adobe Illustrator and drawing up CADs. Sometimes i do some initial sketches on paper, sometimes i do some nice computer illustrations to sell my ideas but the main thing is to show your apparel design ideas visually. As you become more knowledgable as a fashion designer you will be able to go into more depth with your fashion designing. Looking at how the garment will be constructed and showing all the elements of clothing design such as stitching, labels, trims, fabrics etc.
I plan to follow up on this with a post on what is a fashion designers job?
I hope this helps. If you have any comments or questions feel free to let me know and i will try my best to answer them.
